We’re Excited About SQL Server 2019, Here’s Why

Microsoft SQL Server 2019 is out in preview and it’s got some exciting new features. When Microsoft announced the release at their Ignite 2018 conference on Sept 24th, we couldn’t wait to see what was in store. This newest offering will continue to build on the solid foundation of SQL servers while expanding offerings of flexibility and further embracing big data by adding support for Kubernetes, Apache Spark, and Hadoop clusters. Embraces Big Data – Probably the biggest change to SQL 2019 is the ability to manage big data clusters. Big data has always been a bit of a gap in the arsenal of Microsoft’s SQL servers, but not anymore. With SQL 2019, Microsoft is fully embracing big data with Kubernetes. Kubernetes is an open-source container-based platform that represents exciting new possibilities for this SQL engine. What’s the Deal with Oracle 18c? (part 2)

Last week we introduced Oracle’s database 18c, and focused on the new release structure and its increased accessibility on cloud environments.  If you missed this article, here’s a link to go check it out now before heading back over for part 2.  – What’s the Deal with Oracle 18c (part 1) This week we are focusing on more specific feature enhancements to those areas you have come to expect in an Oracle product.  Starting with security and moving on to platform architecture we are looking at how this newest release helps simplify your data management.  We will discuss key features from Database 12c that get exciting upgrades in this new release. What’s the Deal with Oracle 18c? (part 1)

Oracle’s newest release, 18c, is out, and I know what you’re thinking: what happened to 12.2.0.2?  Is it really time for a whole new version?  Well rest assured, this is not really a whole new version. It’s an entirely new method of naming that more accurately reflects what has been going on for years.  The old model of multiple release versions and patch sets wasn’t doing justice to the database.  The multiple release model led many to shy away from adopting any first release database for go-live workloads.  But honestly, for years the patch sets have been full releases in all but name. So now Oracle has decided to change its release schedule, and each annual release will be named after the last two digits of the year.  The plan is to speed the release of smaller changes while avoiding the massive overhauls that used to come with first releases.  What would have been database 12.2.0.2 is now 18c, and 12.2.0.3 will instead be 19. They have also gotten rid of the Patch Set Updates and Proactive Bundle Patches.  Instead we will now get Release Updates (RU) and Release Update Revisions (RUR).  So now that we understand the new release (more…)

Expanding the Market: MS SQL Server 2017 and Linux

Microsoft’s exciting cross-platform product, SQL Server 2017, is poised to reach a whole new audience. Recently this industry leader has joined the growing trend of support for open source solutions.  Our team is continually investigating new innovations for our clients, and we wanted to share what we have discovered about new features and performance. Why Now? Linux is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its security, stability, and efficiency.  Its design protects against virus and malware attacks with a complex architecture and secure user account structure.  With more and more businesses choosing Linux, Microsoft realized they were forcing clients to manage multiple environments by keeping SQL Server only on Windows.  Rohan Kumar, then General Manager of Microsoft Database Systems, discussed the decision with Frederic Lardinois for Tech Crunch.  “We had a couple of discussions in the past where it wasn’t approved,” he told Lardinois, but four years ago his team recognized the value of expanding, so they pitched the idea once again. “The biggest surprising part was that we were expecting a whole lot of back and forth. Five Questions to Help Decide on an Upgrade

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This advice may be a good general principle, but when it comes to databases, not so much. Yet we often hear it when it’s time to upgrade database software. Installing an upgrade may be a significant undertaking, so many people will take any excuse to avoid it. Don’t fall back on a cliché. Here’s how to decide whether to upgrade. What’s the upgrade supposed to accomplish? If the upgrade includes performance improvements, those could have a positive effect on your business. Performance enhancements could include reduced disk calls or improved compression, which might lead to energy or cost savings or an improved experience for your users. And if the upgrade includes security fixes, then it’s a no brainer. You don’t want the next big data breach story to be about your company. Go for the upgrade. What about new features? Only you can decide if the new features will contribute to your business. But I would advise you to consider new features with an out-of-the-box approach. Often a new feature can dramatically change your work processes in ways that aren’t apparent from reading the vendor’s promotional literature. Be open to the possibility that (more…)
