How Much Does Custom Software Cost?

By | Custom Software
Whether discussing software or shelving, the word ‘custom’ is generally associated with high price tags, but that it a common misconception in our industry. When asked “how much does a custom software project cost?” our first, and shortest answer is, not as much as you think. Technology has evolved rapidly over the years, and these projects don’t have the same sticker shock that they used to. You may be surprised to hear that custom software can often be the more economical option. Our second answer is a bit longer, and understandably so. Each project is unique and comes with its own set of requirements. But rather than focusing on cost, it may be more beneficial to focus instead on the software’s ROI. That will give you the most comprehensive picture of any software’s feasibility and profitability. It’s About Finding the Right Solution When an organization is interested in custom software, it is because they have a need to fill, and custom solutions are like a square peg in a square hole, they are designed to be perfectly integrated into the workflow. The resulting efficiency means that a well-designed solution should save you money long-term. They also typically increase process automation, (more…)

Why Choose a Custom Software Solution?

By | Custom Software
If you are familiar with the concept of custom software but still convinced it is not right for you, think again. Custom software isn’t just for the top tier businesses, projects are created on a case by case basis according to each client’s specific needs and budgetary constraints. These solutions have the potential to take your business to the next level by improving your operational efficiency, promoting and enabling growth opportunities with scalability, and improving data security. Here are 3 reasons to consider a custom software solution for your business. Improve Efficiency with Automation – Process automation creates a major opportunity for more valuable resource allocation. Your full-time employees are a valuable and costly resource. Why waste their time and effort performing routine tasks? Increasing automation will improve your organization’s efficiency. With custom software solutions your tools will be designed to most effectively optimize your process needs for the best possible fit into your organizational process, freeing up your manpower for more strategic operations. What is Custom Software Development?

By | Custom Software
Software is an essential component of any business. Processes like supply chain management, operations, customer service, and administration are facilitated by software solutions. There are two main types of software, off-the-shelf and custom. If your current software isn’t meeting your needs or you see room for process improvement or more efficiency, a custom solution might be just the thing you need. What is Custom Software? –  Typical mass-produced, or off-the-shelf, software products are created with a large audience in mind. These solutions are readily available and quick to implement, although you may sacrifice time trying to fit them into your workflow. Since they are made to be widely accepted by a variety of businesses, these off-the-shelf software solutions won’t be seamlessly integrated into your workflow. You will typically find your team making adjustments and concessions to work them into your processes, sacrificing efficiency. In contrast, custom software is created specifically for a unique client, application, or circumstance. These products are commissioned and then developed to your exact specifications by a team of custom software developers. The result is a product that does exactly what you need to do, exactly how you want it to be done, without any extraneous noise. (more…)

Is SQL PaaS Right for You?

By | Azure
With the arrival of the new year, you might be considering how SQL Server can better fit your company’s growth in 2019.  SQL Platform as a Service (PaaS) could be a viable option for managing essential database operations. With PaaS, your SQL Server workloads would run as a hosted service in the cloud with most database management functions maintained by the cloud service provider instead of your IT team. Top Reasons to Consider PaaS Operates completely within the cloud. PaaS provides developers with an environment to develop and deploy applications entirely within the cloud. This includes complex enterprise applications your company may need to solve business problems and simple cloud-based applications. Scaling is easy. You can pay-as-you-go. Service providers allow you to take advantage of advanced development tools as you need them, giving you more value at an affordable rate. Your bottom line increases. You no longer need to purchase software licenses, application infrastructure, or development tools. Finally, your development team can have the opportunity to focus on managing the applications and services they create while the cloud service provider manages the rest. Decrease coding time. The development tools PaaS can provide include some pre-coded application components (i.e., security features, directory services, workflow, etc.) (more…)

Data Science: Making the Most of your Big Data

By | Azure, Database Technology Trends, Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase
As today’s trends bring more and more data to our fingertips, the next challenge is figuring out what to do with it all. The insights gained from proper data analysis have major implications for business. Proper data analysis takes careful consideration, appropriate infrastructure, and understanding of data science. What is Data Science? This is the process of using data to draw conclusions or predict outcomes. You probably use data science already. For example, a restaurant owner may keep records of which dishes are ordered. Over time, he may notice that chili is ordered more frequently on rainy days than on sunny days. This may encourage him to prepare larger batches of chili when the weather calls for rain. This is a very simple example of data science. You can see how understanding patterns and trends in data can help prepare your business. Data science can contribute to the following business improvements: Streamline Processes – You can use data science to analyze your business processes and identify areas to streamline. Looking at your website usage statistics may show areas where your potential clients are losing focus, or identify slow and frustrating pages in your online ordering forms. Identifying these patterns can (more…)

Protecting Your Database from Ransomware like WannaCry

By | Blog | No Comments
You may have heard about the recent WannaCry cyberattack that infected hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide. The ransomware holds a computer hostage until the user pays some amount of money (ransom) to the hacker or until a patch is made and installed. Why did it spread so quickly and how can you prepare for the next one, especially if you are a DBA? It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. Why were the attacks so effective? When this particular ransomware emerged on May 12th 2017, it had used an exploit on Windows systems that had been addressed by a critical patch two months earlier in March 2017. So, if end users kept up to date with receiving the latest critical security patches as they became available, they would have avoided being infected. Unfortunately, many businesses were not adequately prepared for an attack like this because maintain updates and they did not have the right security processes in place. It’s critical that companies are proactive in the measures they take to mitigate the risks involved with today’s cyber threats or they will become vulnerable. Lack of preparedness is one of the biggest factors why this cyber (more…)
