2018 Trends for Database and Data Management – Six Months Later (Trend 3)

More Companies Will Die From Data indigestion Than From Data Starvation   Read about Trend 2 It’s True – companies today are swimming in data. And all the while, they are spending more money to create data, store data, manage data and secure data. Plus, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the Internet of Everything (IoE)  thing, is really just getting started. Data lakes, warehouses and silos are increasingly becoming obsolete words in the modern vocabulary of data management. A new approach of data architecture that facilitates orchestrating, securing and rapidly deploying data from various structured and unstructured sources to create actionable value is emerging. When data doubles every two years, the new tools and approaches to data management, real-time analytics and actionable solutions will no longer be nice-to-have. They will be got-to-have. Business data now is now a two-edged sword, it presents an existential opportunity and an existential crisis for your company. Want to avoid the crisis and leverage the opportunity?   Join Dobler Consulting and Anthony Antonello, VP, SAP HANA Global Center of Excellence, for a Live Webinar June 19th, 2018 @ 2:00 PM EDT for: SAP Sybase Roadmap 2018 View Video Replay and Download Presentation (more…)

2018 Trends for Database and Data Management – Six Months Later (Trend 2)

The Rise of Real-Time Transactional Data   Read about Trend 1 Read about Trend 3 It seems analyst are hard at work to find the right wording that connects the promise of in-memory technology, to advanced analytics to multiple database sources, at the precise moment of transaction with the customer. Forrester calls it the odd-looking word  "translytic" as in "translytic data platforms", Gartner uses the term "hybrid transaction / analytical processing, hopefully, HTAP for short, and IDC uses the rather straightforward "analytic transactional processing" which could mean everything and nothing at the same time. These rather athletic examples of concept mash-ups got me thinking about basketball and that maybe in-memory technology which makes it really all happen, is a point guard and that analytic engines and datasets are the centers and forwards of the game. And who was inarguably the greatest point guard in the history of the game, guy named Magic – Magic Johnson. So maybe the word the analyst are searching for is Magic... My point is, that technology and dry sounding words are not the point at all. Creating business value, creating Magic is the point. It's when data meets analytics, meets creativity and meets the customer (more…)

Remote Database Administration An Idea Whose Time Has Come…   Tampa Bay – February 22nd, 2018: In 2008 Peter Dobler, CEO and Founder of Dobler Consulting had an idea. He saw that database volumes were growing exponentially, that they were increasingly less secure and the talent pool of skilled Database Administrators (DBAs) was shrinking. His entrepreneurial idea was to attract the most talented DBA’s, give them the very best tools, training and processes; then remotely service large corporate databases more scalably and securely as a managed solution. “In 2008 the concept of Remote Database Administration was novel thinking to many, but not all, corporate CIOs,” said Dobler “I am forever grateful to the early adopters who saw that data growth, security and talent could either be an existential threat or a competitive opportunity for their enterprises.” The implications of exponential data growth are alarming, the research firms IDC confirms that from 2013 – 2020 data will grow from 4.4 trillion gigabytes to 44 trillion – a 10X factor. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an 11% increase in the need for DBAs. And the Ponemon Institute estimates the average data breach cost US companies $3.5 million in 2017, with a 27% (more…)

Sybase Ranks as Number 1 in IDC White Paper for Lowest Database Costs Over 5 Years

By | | No Comments
International Data Corporation (IDC), the premier provider of market intelligence, and advisory services for IT companies, has written an insightful white paper about the true cost of database ownership for companies: "Calculating the True Cost of RDBMS Ownership and How Sybase ASE Stacks Up: A Guide for SAP Business Suite Users." IDC interviewed 12 large organizations with over 12,000 employees who have RDBMS systems, who are in a variety of industries. Six of the companies are running databases from multiple vendors. Here are some of their conclusions. (Note: These findings are for a five year total cost per 100 users and a 240 gigabyte database). Sybase ASE 15.7 total costs for the 5 years are $339,773. Using Sybase saved each of these 12 companies $128,580 over other RBDMS. These savings were reflected in IT staffing, hardware, software licenses, and database downtimes. The following features contributed to this large cost savings: Automated functions for DBA's Self-management capabilities for databases to tune themselves Data compression to reduce storage footprint Large object blocks (LOBs) stored in-row, rather than as separate objects. In-place execution of operations instead of using temp storage After describing Sybase's ability to lower the total costs of operation, IDC suggests (more…)
