Is SQL PaaS Right for You?

By | Azure
With the arrival of the new year, you might be considering how SQL Server can better fit your company’s growth in 2019.  SQL Platform as a Service (PaaS) could be a viable option for managing essential database operations. With PaaS, your SQL Server workloads would run as a hosted service in the cloud with most database management functions maintained by the cloud service provider instead of your IT team. Top Reasons to Consider PaaS Operates completely within the cloud. PaaS provides developers with an environment to develop and deploy applications entirely within the cloud. This includes complex enterprise applications your company may need to solve business problems and simple cloud-based applications. Scaling is easy. You can pay-as-you-go. Service providers allow you to take advantage of advanced development tools as you need them, giving you more value at an affordable rate. Your bottom line increases. You no longer need to purchase software licenses, application infrastructure, or development tools. Finally, your development team can have the opportunity to focus on managing the applications and services they create while the cloud service provider manages the rest. Decrease coding time. The development tools PaaS can provide include some pre-coded application components (i.e., security features, directory services, workflow, etc.) (more…)

What’s New in Management Studio Version 17.6

By | SQL Server
Microsoft continues to make great strides in improving SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). Version 17.6 comes with some impressive new features and bug fixes that enhance your user experience. Azure SQL Database Managed Instance Users If you’re using the newly developed Azure SQL Database Managed Instance, a new model of Azure SQL Database, you should definitely consider upgrading to SSMS v 17.6. One of the most notable changes is the added support for some of its most common management scenarios. After you complete the upgrade, you can expect a much more efficient support process if you encounter issues with the following: Databases – Creating, altering, backing up, and restoring databases are all fairly common tasks in database management, which makes their processes easy to support. Object Explorer – All technical issues that arise while using Object Explorer to manage objects in each SQL Server instance are eligible for support. SQL Linked Servers – You can relax when using Linked Servers to connect to other database instances on a remote server, same server, or an entirely different machine. The SQL Tools Team has you covered. SQL Agent Jobs – Your automated execution jobs/tasks usually consist of several steps. Any disruption can (more…)

Cloud Security with Oracle’s Identity SOC

Databases are high value targets. 76% of organizations have experienced a security incident.[i] Add that to the semi-novelty and porosity of the cloud, and it’s no wonder you’re a little nervous about security. If you’re not concerned, you’re not paying attention. But the best products out there are designed to help reduce your workload and bring peace of mind. Oracle’s cloud security protocols do just that. The innovative Security Operations Center gives you visibility, control and intelligent detection with less oversight. Oracle’s SOC Oracle’s Identity Security Operations Center (SOC) is comprised of several offerings to create a comprehensive security system for cloud, on-premises and hybrid environments. It takes Oracle CASB Cloud Service, Oracle Identity Cloud Service, Oracle Security and Monitoring Analytics Cloud Service, and Oracle Configuration and Compliance Cloud Service and rolls them into one package. Let’s look at some key features. Identity-Based – Network-centric security just doesn’t cut it anymore with the rapidly diversifying landscape of platforms and users. With more and more people accessing SaaS from mobile devices, you need a more intelligent way to monitor threats. Identity-based security uses machine learning and AI to detect patterns in user activity and target potential threats. Oracle’s Security Operations Center (more…)

What’s the Deal with Oracle 18c? (part 1)

By | Oracle
Oracle’s newest release, 18c, is out, and I know what you’re thinking: what happened to 12.2.0.2?  Is it really time for a whole new version?  Well rest assured, this is not really a whole new version. It’s an entirely new method of naming that more accurately reflects what has been going on for years.  The old model of multiple release versions and patch sets wasn’t doing justice to the database.  The multiple release model led many to shy away from adopting any first release database for go-live workloads.  But honestly, for years the patch sets have been full releases in all but name. So now Oracle has decided to change its release schedule, and each annual release will be named after the last two digits of the year.  The plan is to speed the release of smaller changes while avoiding the massive overhauls that used to come with first releases.  What would have been database 12.2.0.2 is now 18c, and 12.2.0.3 will instead be 19. They have also gotten rid of the Patch Set Updates and Proactive Bundle Patches.  Instead we will now get Release Updates (RU) and Release Update Revisions (RUR).  So now that we understand the new release (more…)

Expanding the Market: MS SQL Server 2017 and Linux

By | Blog, Database Technology Trends, SQL Server
Microsoft’s exciting cross-platform product, SQL Server 2017, is poised to reach a whole new audience. Recently this industry leader has joined the growing trend of support for open source solutions.  Our team is continually investigating new innovations for our clients, and we wanted to share what we have discovered about new features and performance. Why Now? Linux is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its security, stability, and efficiency.  Its design protects against virus and malware attacks with a complex architecture and secure user account structure.  With more and more businesses choosing Linux, Microsoft realized they were forcing clients to manage multiple environments by keeping SQL Server only on Windows.  Rohan Kumar, then General Manager of Microsoft Database Systems, discussed the decision with Frederic Lardinois for Tech Crunch.  “We had a couple of discussions in the past where it wasn’t approved,” he told Lardinois, but four years ago his team recognized the value of expanding, so they pitched the idea once again. “The biggest surprising part was that we were expecting a whole lot of back and forth. It was really surprising to see how quickly the decisions got made,” recalls Kumar. How? With the company’s support in place, Kumar’s team needed (more…)
