DataOps – Developing Processes for Analytics and Data Management

By | Blog, Uncategorized
Big data and analytics mean big things for industries across all sectors. As data continues to grow, so do the applications. The newest challenge is streamlining the analytics process to improve efficiency and create actionable insights in a timely manner. That is where DataOps comes in. This newest development utilizes concepts learned from DevOps practices to simplify and streamline the data pipeline and analytics process. Let’s take a look at how this works. The Science of Analytics The analysis of big data is a complicated process of pattern recognition using statistical tools and algorithms. Your data scientists, engineers, and analysts may all play some part in this role. Managing the analytics process from an operational standpoint, as well as a statistical standpoint, can be time-consuming. If you want to have real, useable insights from your data it is imperative to validate both input and output data. It’s taxing to your analysts and means longer lead times on identifying key insights. But these steps are there for a reason, right? You can’t skip vital processes just because they’re lengthy. But you can innovate those processes and improve their efficiency. The development world has been working on this for a while with (more…)

Containers are In – Azure Can Help

By | Azure, Blog, Uncategorized
Application development and deployment has come a long way in recent years. The introduction of containers opens the door for more lightweight, portable, scalable development. Add to that the capabilities of Kubernetes clusters and you get a new level of efficiency when managing application development, testing, and deployment. If your team is actively using Linux containers and Kubernetes clusters, it’s important to make sure your database products are supporting your efforts. Microsoft Azure has been helping its clients utilize and manage containers with Azure Container Service (ACS), now taking it a step further with the development of Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). Why Containers? Containers have tons of benefits for API development. They are basically self-contained instances that run natively on your OS, maintaining configuration settings across multiple platforms. Imagine your developers working on an API on their laptop, which has one set of configurations, and then sending to another developer for review. Will the other environment behave exactly the same way? Impossible to know. With virtualization, you can eliminate these issues, but this is taxing on your system. Containers are lightweight so that you can run multiple containers on your machine without experiencing performance issues. Remember, these are running natively, (more…)

How Much Does Custom Software Cost?

By | Custom Software
Whether discussing software or shelving, the word ‘custom’ is generally associated with high price tags, but that it a common misconception in our industry. When asked “how much does a custom software project cost?” our first, and shortest answer is, not as much as you think. Technology has evolved rapidly over the years, and these projects don’t have the same sticker shock that they used to. You may be surprised to hear that custom software can often be the more economical option. Our second answer is a bit longer, and understandably so. Each project is unique and comes with its own set of requirements. But rather than focusing on cost, it may be more beneficial to focus instead on the software’s ROI. That will give you the most comprehensive picture of any software’s feasibility and profitability. It’s About Finding the Right Solution When an organization is interested in custom software, it is because they have a need to fill, and custom solutions are like a square peg in a square hole, they are designed to be perfectly integrated into the workflow. The resulting efficiency means that a well-designed solution should save you money long-term. They also typically increase process automation, (more…)

What is Azure Stack and Why Do You Need It?

By | Azure
Whether you are using Azure or not, I am sure you are familiar with the term. The Azure Cloud is the fastest growing cloud computing service out there and is quickly edging out AWS for the market. It is a powerful and expansive service that fully supports hybrid infrastructures for robust data management. You may not know quite as much about Azure Stack, so we wanted to shed some light on this Azure extension. What is Azure Stack? – This service is an addition to your Azure Cloud network that enables offline operations on your edge computing machines. It allows your on-site users to manage data, perform analyses, and even design queries using little bandwidth. Actions can be performed in an offline environment and then reserved for specific connection windows and deployed to the cloud. Let’s Talk About Edge Computing – Your network is a complicated series of user APIs and core network processing capabilities. Think of this overall structure as a web of interconnected strings leading back to the central data hub. Edge computing refers to the processes that take place farther away from your centralized network, literally at the edge of your web. We will discuss this in (more…)

Microsoft’s exciting cross-platform product, SQL Server 2017, is poised to reach a whole new audience. Recently this industry leader has joined the growing trend of support for open source solutions.  Our team is continually investigating new innovations for our clients, and we wanted to share what we have discovered about new features and performance. Why Now? Linux is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its security, stability, and efficiency.  Its design protects against virus and malware attacks with a complex architecture and secure user account structure.  With more and more businesses choosing Linux, Microsoft realized they were forcing clients to manage multiple environments by keeping SQL Server only on Windows.  Rohan Kumar, then General Manager of Microsoft Database Systems, discussed the decision with Frederic Lardinois for Tech Crunch.  “We had a couple of discussions in the past where it wasn’t approved,” he told Lardinois, but four years ago his team recognized the value of expanding, so they pitched the idea once again. “The biggest surprising part was that we were expecting a whole lot of back and forth. It was really surprising to see how quickly the decisions got made,” recalls Kumar. How? With the company’s support in place, Kumar’s team needed (more…)
