How Much Does Custom Software Cost?

By | Custom Software, Uncategorized
Whether discussing software or shelving, the word ‘custom’ is generally associated with high price tags, but that it a common misconception in our industry. When asked “how much does a custom software project cost?” our first, and shortest answer is, not as much as you think. Technology has evolved rapidly over the years, and these projects don’t have the same sticker shock that they used to. You may be surprised to hear that custom software can often be the more economical option. Our second answer is a bit longer, and understandably so. Each project is unique and comes with its own set of requirements. But rather than focusing on cost, it may be more beneficial to focus instead on the software’s ROI. That will give you the most comprehensive picture of any software’s feasibility and profitability. It’s About Finding the Right Solution When an organization is interested in custom software, it is because they have a need to fill, and custom solutions are like a square peg in a square hole, they are designed to be perfectly integrated into the workflow. The resulting efficiency means that a well-designed solution should save you money long-term. They also typically increase process automation, (more…)

What is Azure Stack and Why Do You Need It?

By | Azure
Whether you are using Azure or not, I am sure you are familiar with the term. The Azure Cloud is the fastest growing cloud computing service out there and is quickly edging out AWS for the market. It is a powerful and expansive service that fully supports hybrid infrastructures for robust data management. You may not know quite as much about Azure Stack, so we wanted to shed some light on this Azure extension. What is Azure Stack? – This service is an addition to your Azure Cloud network that enables offline operations on your edge computing machines. It allows your on-site users to manage data, perform analyses, and even design queries using little bandwidth. Actions can be performed in an offline environment and then reserved for specific connection windows and deployed to the cloud. Let’s Talk About Edge Computing – Your network is a complicated series of user APIs and core network processing capabilities. Think of this overall structure as a web of interconnected strings leading back to the central data hub. Edge computing refers to the processes that take place farther away from your centralized network, literally at the edge of your web. We will discuss this in (more…)

5 Tips for Managing Multiple Cloud Providers

By | Azure, Database Technology Trends, Oracle, SAP HANA, SQL Server, Sybase
Cloud adoption continues to rise and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. As companies become more comfortable with the cloud platform as a tool, they are moving farther from on-prem setups. The newest trend shows many groups now using multi-cloud solutions. RightScale 201 State of the Cloud Report found that 81% of respondents have a multi-cloud environment. The organizational average was just under 5 clouds, including production and test environments. Why Multi-Cloud? – Each cloud provider has different strengths and weaknesses to offer. Using multiple clouds lets you take advantage of the best tools and applications for your workloads without limiting your resources. It can also be strategic as companies can shift workloads to their various platforms depending on current prices and availability parameters. Adopting a multi-cloud environment can help take your workload management to the next level, but it can also come with some challenges to prepare for. Here are 5 tips to help you manage multiple cloud providers. Choose Wisely – Don’t be suckered in by low rates and storage fees. Those numbers can (and will) change. The more important factor is to select the clouds that have key features you need. Look at the applications and (more…)

Cloud Security with Oracle’s Identity SOC

By | Oracle
Databases are high value targets. 76% of organizations have experienced a security incident.[i] Add that to the semi-novelty and porosity of the cloud, and it’s no wonder you’re a little nervous about security. If you’re not concerned, you’re not paying attention. But the best products out there are designed to help reduce your workload and bring peace of mind. Oracle’s cloud security protocols do just that. The innovative Security Operations Center gives you visibility, control and intelligent detection with less oversight. Oracle’s SOC Oracle’s Identity Security Operations Center (SOC) is comprised of several offerings to create a comprehensive security system for cloud, on-premises and hybrid environments. It takes Oracle CASB Cloud Service, Oracle Identity Cloud Service, Oracle Security and Monitoring Analytics Cloud Service, and Oracle Configuration and Compliance Cloud Service and rolls them into one package. Let’s look at some key features. Identity-Based – Network-centric security just doesn’t cut it anymore with the rapidly diversifying landscape of platforms and users. With more and more people accessing SaaS from mobile devices, you need a more intelligent way to monitor threats. Identity-based security uses machine learning and AI to detect patterns in user activity and target potential threats. Oracle’s Security Operations Center (more…)

Expanding the Market: MS SQL Server 2017 and Linux

By | Blog, Database Technology Trends, SQL Server
Microsoft’s exciting cross-platform product, SQL Server 2017, is poised to reach a whole new audience. Recently this industry leader has joined the growing trend of support for open source solutions.  Our team is continually investigating new innovations for our clients, and we wanted to share what we have discovered about new features and performance. Why Now? Linux is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its security, stability, and efficiency.  Its design protects against virus and malware attacks with a complex architecture and secure user account structure.  With more and more businesses choosing Linux, Microsoft realized they were forcing clients to manage multiple environments by keeping SQL Server only on Windows.  Rohan Kumar, then General Manager of Microsoft Database Systems, discussed the decision with Frederic Lardinois for Tech Crunch.  “We had a couple of discussions in the past where it wasn’t approved,” he told Lardinois, but four years ago his team recognized the value of expanding, so they pitched the idea once again. “The biggest surprising part was that we were expecting a whole lot of back and forth. It was really surprising to see how quickly the decisions got made,” recalls Kumar. How? With the company’s support in place, Kumar’s team needed (more…)

SAP Sybase Replication Server 15.6 | Real Time Loading into SAP Sybase IQ

By | White Papers | No Comments

SAP Sybase has developed a new, innovative and dynamic staging technology, allowing full use of the native, high-speed data load mechanism SAP Sybase IQ offers . . . Real Time Loading (RTL).

RTL addresses the need to have another system prepare the data for load by taking real time data movement from the source database, and applying staging technology to the data transfer in the background.

Up until now, the only option for loading data from an Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) database . . . airline reservation systems, financial transactions, etc., into a SAP Sybase IQ data warehouse was a so-called staging process. Staging means that the OLTP is isolated from the data warehouse loading process to ensure data integrity, due to the rapidly changing data content in the OLTP database systems.

Direct replication into SAP Sybase IQ was limited to low data movement environments. The reason lies in the fundamental differences on how SAP Sybase IQ processes data, and data movement strategies SAP Sybase Replication Server applies.

SAP Sybase IQ is a column vector database. Retrieving a single row requires assembling the row from each column component. This process makes row by row processing ineffective, and the so- called “trickle feed” loading of SAP Sybase IQ nearly impossible. The advantage of a column vector database is in the unmatched speed for complex data retrieval operations and data aggregation on huge data sets.
