What’s New in Oracle’s Database 19c

Looking for something specific?

Oracle is one of the leading providers of database services with decades of experience at the top of the pack. Their new product releases are always exciting to watch, improving upon their legacy of client-focused products and services. Last year they released database 18c, the first of a new annual release schedule, that featured the revolutionary Autonomous Cloud database along with Multitenant Architecture, In-Memory Columnar Architecture, and Native Database Sharding. This year’s database 19c continues to build on the foundations set in previous years with a focus on stability and efficiency. If you are thinking about upgrading or migrating to Oracle’s database 19c, here are a few special features to expect in this newest version.

New Features in 19c

This database version comes with some exciting enhancements to make your job faster and easier. While the main focus of this development cycle has been on stability, there are a few new features focused on automating and optimizing for the client. Let’s look at a few of these enhancements.

  • Automatic Indexing – Indexing items takes time and can mean a lot of busywork for your IT team. With Automatic Indexing, Oracle’s 19c uses machine learning algorithms to identify items, map and validate indexing options, and automatically index for you. These algorithms learn as they go, so they only get more efficient and accurate in time. Automation is the key to process improvement. With this tool you can save time and resources by automating you indexing and focusing your energies elsewhere.
  • Active Data Guard DML Redirect – Standby backup databases are a necessary part of many disaster recovery plans, but they can be expensive to carry as inactive processing power. Oracle has worked to make these databases more valuable in your strategy since launching Active Data Guard on 11c. That feature, which enables you to use the standby database resources to run reports and backups, gets an upgrade in 19c. This version adds the capability of running transactions by creating an immediate redirect to the primary database. Transactions run on the backup are immediately sent and stored in first the primary and then the backup databases. It doesn’t matter whether your databases are in the cloud or on-prem, with Active Data Guard Redirect, you can now use your standby database to even more advantage.
  • Hybrid Partitioned Tables – Big data means big storage, and with more and more information stored for longer periods of time, it is essential to find the most efficient options to manage the growing burden. Oracle’s Hybrid Partitioned Tables takes a crack at this by enabling you to partition data, and then select which partitions should be stored on the database for query access and which should be held as read-only files in external locations. That way you can minimize the burden on the live database while maintaining important data for long-term storage and access.
  • Other – This release also sees numerous JSON enhancements, as well as features to optimize data inserts, real-time statistics, and more. Oracle’s database services are designed with the client’s needs in mind. For more information on Oracle’s databases 19c and a full list of the new features, visit Oracle’s Database Feature’s page.
